  • Developed in 1950’s by Dr Ainslie Meares
  • Meares taught people to relieve and manage anxiety by experiencing mental rest
  • When correctly practised – anxiety levels and reduced and distressing symptoms gradually disappear – bringing about a more peaceful, balanced life
  • Without learning how to rest the mind, the level of stress and anxiety generally does NOT go away instead it compounds
  • The more stress you experience the more you get stressed

Try breathing exercises

When things get rough, take deep breaths in through your nose; hold it for 10 seconds, then release. You’ll notice that this will relieve tension.

Controlled Breathing Technique:

  • This rapid relaxation technique involves breathing in and out nine times in three series of three breaths.
  • In the first series of three breaths, inhale deeply and, as you exhale slowly, say quietly or think to yourself, “Calm body.” Repeat three times.
  • In the second series of three breaths, inhale deeply and, as you exhale, say quietly or think to yourself, “Calm mind.”
  • In the final series of three breaths, inhale deeply and, as you exhale, say (and do) “Smile.”

Sound

Sound is a traditional healing tool in many cultures in the world. Drumming, chanting or singing, bells, gongs – all produce vibrations and an internal resonance that promote beneficial changes in your brain.

This will help you reach more relaxed and harmonious states.

You can experiment with this by listening to chanting, or by chanting Om.

What other sounds are soothing? Sounds of nature (try putting on a nature sounds CD) and mediation music.

The experience of gratitude has historically been a focus of several world religions, but the systematic study of gratitude within psychology only began around the year 2000. Psychology has been more focused on understanding distress; however, with the advent of the positive psychology movement, gratitude has become a mainstream focus of psychological research.

Gratitude is an emotion that occurs after people receive help, depending on how they interpret the situation. Specifically, gratitude is experienced if people perceive the help they receive as valuable to them, costly to their benefactor, and given by the benefactor with benevolent intentions.

Writing a gratitude journal can be a great way of learning a more positive way of thinking. It helps you to really appreciate the small pleasures in life and to appreciate the things you do have instead of the things you don’t.

Each day, at the end of the day, get together as a family and take few minutes to reflect on the past day. Let each family member find at least five things that happened that day that he/she appreciates and is grateful for.

Planning Quiet Moments

The Power of Solitude

When was the last time you sat and stared off into space?

Did you get into trouble for that as a child, for daydreaming in class? For being absent of mind, even though present in body?

Maybe that’s why we resist it now…

Take a moment (not while driving!) and just let your mind drift. Watch the clouds move in the sky. Watch people walk past you on the street.

Let your mind wander. Don’t tell your thoughts where to go.

It’s amazing where we can go if we let go … even if only for a minute.

 

The brain benefits from quiet moments during the day:

A quiet moment does not involve any goal, task completion, or endpoint.

It is about process and about being in the here and now.

Allow your brain to shut down and to turn inward.

Allow your brain to freely roam and to explore ideas and feelings that get shut out with structure and task driven behaviour.

Your most creative moments will come from such experiences.

It might mean a walk, sitting on a bench or under a tree, or playing an instrument.

  • Begin to clear clutter by listing all of your uncompleted tasks, personal commitments, objectives and projects on a sheet of paper
  • You are now ready to begin making decisions about these items
  • Jack Canfield, author of the Success Principles Journey (this is where this idea comes from) suggests deciding in one of the following manners:
    • Ditch – the project gets tossed
    • Delegate – outsource the project
    • Action – complete it
    • File – file it away for future date
  • Listing and deciding which uncompleted projects is the first step to clear clutter from your mind.

Clutter is those things you never use, do not really need, do not like, are broken or a poor fit, to name just a few examples.

Make that clutter a priority. Like many goals in life, you have to schedule time to achieve them.

Set aside time each week to tackle the clutter in your environment and in your life.

Procrastination has a high cost.

It robs you of vital energy and can produce feelings of guilt.

 

Take a day in which you can do things by yourself.

Take yourself out to a movie, go to a museum or art gallery, or do something you’ve always wanted to do but never made time for. In doing so, you’ll be able to enjoy the peace and quiet of being alone.

Free your mind from the problems that swirl around you.
Take your mind off of those things that are causing you stress by working on a puzzle or spending time with friends and family.
Or perhaps you need to go out for a nice dinner or weekend getaway to free your mind.

Exercise regularly.
Exercise causes your brain to release endorphins, which are known to make you feel happy.
It’s like the body’s natural “high.”

Movement is wonderful for quieting the mind because it teaches you how to listen to your body. Yoga, Pilates and Tai Chi are both excellent forms of movement to quiet the mind

Take a walk.
Concentrate on your surroundings.
If your mind wanders back to your to-do list gently redirect it.
Even if all you can do is take a 15-minute walk, take it. That can be great alone time for you.

  • Alleviate some of your mental stress by creating a schedule.
  • When you have all tasks organized and planned out, with free time added in between, a significant amount of tension will be lifted.
  • You will live more efficiently and suffer from fewer overwhelming moments.
  • You cannot plan for everything, and schedules must be altered from time to time.
  • However, having a solid schedule for the things you know you must do, prioritized by importance, can make a huge difference in your mental stress.
  • Plus, this is a great way of guaranteeing you have time set aside to practice your mind-decluttering techniques.
  • Have a monthly schedule, which turns into a weekly plan which turns into a daily to-do list.

Enter the Matrix – this is how to determine what tasks need to be prioritized.

Draw a square and divide it into quarters.

On one side, write: “Urgent” and “Not Urgent”; on the other, write: “Important” and “Not Important.”

Prioritize the things that are Urgent and important, then Important and Not Urgent.

Why? Because you want to do the things that matter most first before you get sucked into the things that matter less.
