It is important to reward yourself for what you have achieved. It can be the motivator to actually start clearing the clutter. Some rewards could be a phone call to a friend, 30 minutes to read a book, a glass of wine, hiring a house cleaner or ironing lady. The ideas are endless the important part is to celebrate and reward yourself for a job well done.

We can have all the good intentions in the world to clear out the clutter; however, at times, the most difficult part can actually be starting. The simple tip of telling someone what you are planning to do can hold you accountable to start. Even if you think, I will just do fifteen minutes then at least I can say I have started. Once 15 minutes is up, you are already on a roll and can keep going.

Have you considered your reasons for not clearing the clutter? Dig deep here, do not assume the first answer is the real reason. Think a little harder. Have you ever focused on the benefits of clearing the clutter? No doubt at some stage you have cleaned up a drawer, cupboard or bookshelf - how did it make you feel? What benefits did you get when you cleared the clutter?

Many of us place a dollar value on an item and that is our reason for keeping it. We may have paid $10.00, $25.00, $100.00 or $1,000. The price of an item isn’t the only factor to be considered. Other factors include storing the item, time to take care of the item, the impact of our emotions on others around us, the impact on our values. Clutter can be a mental distraction. Have you stopped inviting friends over – then clutter has a social cost. It can also tie us to the past. Most of us want so much more out of life; clutter limits us, keeps routines established and limits our ability to live life to the fullest.
